Maps are the playable areas that can be found within the world of VALORANT. They are a gameplay-first representation of the missions that the VALORANT PROTOCOL has been on.

Lore[]
Maps are Points of Interest that typically contain some form of Radianite related technology, with each of them serving to "tell a story about the wider world of VALORANT and it’s conflict"[1]. This meant that for the first two years of the game, all of the maps took place in α-Earth[2], and some it wasn't until the release of Pearl that the first Ω-Earth was introduced.
One important element of the maps in-game is that they are no people other than the agents when playing a match. There were two reasons given for this in a Discord QnA:
- The inhabitants of the area flee as soon as they hear the VALORANT PROTOCOL and Legion agents fighting each other[3]
- "Sometimes lore needs to support gameplay requirements"[4], a prime example of maps being gameplay-first.
Team Deathmatch[]
The introduction of TDM into the game came with the robotic character of Maxbot. The cleaner robot enacted a revenge plan on the PROTOCOL agents that saw them traveling to maps based on those from α-Earth. The maps are copycats of the originals, being heavily based on them but with some discrepancies, and notably each spawn area features a Maxbot insert in the form of a portal and a screen with Maxbot's eye, suggesting that these maps are simulations rather than real locations.
