Lore[]
Born and raised in Los Angeles, United States, Gekko is the 22nd agent to join the VALORANT Protocol. Living with his immigrated Hispanic mother and spending his life in Los Angeles, Gekko is fluent in both English and Spanish, seamlessly alternating between the two languages during conversations with his mother and Reyna, as seen in his reveal trailer.
Gekko's real name is Mateo Armendáriz De la Fuente (nickname Teo)[1], and he seems to live with his mother. He presumably has dark brown hair as his eyebrows indicate which he bleached prior to his reveal trailer where we can see him dye it green. His flat hairstyle remained constant after him dyeing it.
Gekko is noted for his chill personality, giving positive vibes to his team and generally hyping them up. As one of the younger agents on the roster, his vocabulary is filled with informalities and colloquial vibes.
Events leading up to recruitment[]
A series of unusual events happening around a Kingdom Facility in LA and Gekko's eventual involvements with the theft and rescue of a few Radivores being researched in that facility were what that prompted his recruitment to the VALORANT Protocol.
The events leading to Gekko's recruitment starts in Patch 6.02 and an Email from Killjoy to Brimstone. Kingdom's heavy research on creatures living in volatile conditions attracts the VP's attention and after the news of "weird things" being spotted near a Kingdom facility in LA and the residents' unease the VP starts keeping the situation in LA under surveillance; It is in this time that Gekko manages to get into the Kingdom West facility and steal his little crew and escape. It is unknown exactly how Gekko manages to get into Kingdom West Facility but he manages to escape through an interverse portal opened by his radivores. The Protocol noticing this altercation helps Gekko escape and hide from the K-Sec on his trail, as is shown in the Patch 6.05 Homescreen.
From that moment onward Gekko stays in touch with the Protocol, mainly through Reyna; Gekko is the only human who can communicate with his four Radivores and control them. This paired with the immense potential of such creatures potentially plays a noticeable role in him eventually being recruited to the Protocol despite his inexperience in any combat field. The details of how Gekko managed to earn the trust his little crew of Radivores is unclear but the bright markings on his left forearm seem to be a kind of bond between him and his radivores enabling him to understand them and communicate with them.
Gekko's combat capabilities are amplified by his gang of unusual creatures: Mosh, Wingman, Dizzy, and Thrash, with each providing a unique way of helping him defeat his adversaries, and seem to lend their help to him in his everyday activities. In-game, Wingman can even carry the spike himself and plant or defuse it.
Gekko receives training from Brimstone, whose contact he has saved as "Beard Papi". On top of instruction from Brimstone, Gekko is also taking lessons from Harbor, and refers to him as "coach". Interestingly, he seems to have a good relationship with Reyna, due in-part to their shared Hispanic heritage, and refers to her as a queen. It's also likely that they have some degree of shared history together prior to the Protocol that fostered their connection and joining.
As for his gang, Gekko can summon and retrieve his creatures from a cross-body bag over his chest, which glows and changes color upon summoning one of his companions. Each creature has their own ability and their own personality, moving and working in coordination with each other to make a complete team. Beyond their individual abilities, it appears they are able to sense or see when Gekko himself is in danger.
Upon one of his summons being damaged, they turn into a floating ball similar to a frog egg, and similar to the appearance of Mosh when held. Gekko can canonically pick them up like actual objects, but in the gameplay teasers, he picks them up similar to grabbing an ultimate orb. These creatures are also believed to be sentient and react well to praise and affection, as shown by Dizzy in the GREATER THAN ONE video.
Powers and Abilities[]
Mosh (he/him)[]
Gekko can summon Mosh at will and often wields him much like a grenade weapon. Mosh is similar to a frog egg as a sphere of green slimy liquid with large eyes. He is featured in the playercard Tight Knit, Gekko's teaser card from the Episode 6 Act 1 battlepass. When used, he will seemingly make an area with more "Moshes" inside of it, shortly exploding afterward. Mosh tends to float within Gekko's cross-body bag's carrier the most often.
Dizzy (she/her)[]
Dizzy is a small blue armadillo-like creature which floats when idle. When attacking, she summons a bubble around her and fires a blue plasma-like substance out of her tail. The projectile she shoots has a slimy, sticky texture and is blue.
Wingman (he/him)[]
A small, yellow creature that is able to appear around Gekko, Wingman's head bears resemblance to that of an axolotl with a dark gray metallic head-plate. He walks in a bipedal fashion and appears to be the most independent of Gekko's gang, and, as his name suggests, is Gekko’s "Wingman".
Thrash (she/her)[]
Thrash, a shark-like creature, originaly living in salt water (as seen in abyss) can be directly controlled by Gekko, but is also sentient when uncontrolled. She is shown to share similar values to Gekko, having a strong dislike for Kingdom. Hovering and floating slightly above the ground, Thrash also seems to be the most shaky out of the bunch, though much like the other summons, still values Gekko's safety above all else. Notably, her size has the most difference out of all the other Buddies, being able to go from a handheld size to half the height of Gekko himself.
Appearance[]
Gekko is a young Hispanic man with dyed green hair. His neck features 3 dolphin tattoos on the left side. He features additional tattoos on both of his arms. When he summons any of his creatures, the tattoos on his hands, wrist and forearms glow a light corresponding to the buddy. He wears a lime green sweater and brown jeans, which are rolled up to his lower calf, exposing his blue socks and white shoes. His creatures, as mentioned above, are stored in a shoulder band-like strap across his chest.
Relationships[]
From what we can see in the teasers, Gekko's trailer, and from the voicelines, it is safe to say Gekko and Reyna know and trust each other, having a sort of mother and son/sibling relationship. Reyna does not appear to be biologically related to Gekko, but they share a close relationship regardless.
According to in game voicelines, Harbor is Gekko's swim coach, and Gekko seems to show a great amount of respect in Harbor for what he does and how he helps him.
Gekko seems to show respect towards Brimstone after he is recruited into the VALORANT Protocol as shown in his teasers, and on his phone it is shown that he calls Brimstone "Beard Papi". It is also shown in the Radiant Entertainment System skinline reveal trailer and the Patch 6.08 homescreen that Gekko enjoys playing video games with Brimstone and they often play against each other competitively.
Gekko seems to have a bad relationship with Deadlock because she is wary of his creatures after she was attacked by the giant radivore polar bear and worry they will betray the crew. Gekko is annoyed when Deadlock appears to be hostile towards his creatures and he tells Brimstone on his own that he controls the creatures and they won't get out of his control. He informs Brimstone that Deadlock needs to stop being overly hostile towards his creatures.
Cards[]
The VALORANT Gekko card is a generic portrait of Gekko.
The Out On A Limb card depicts Gekko running away from two light sources in the sky, presumably drones or helicopters chasing him. Interestingly, his gang of creatures is nowhere to be seen in the card.
The Tight Knit card was the first teaser for Gekko, revealing Mosh and teasing Gekko's 'tight knit' relationship with his creatures.
The VERSUS // Deadlock + Gekko card shows the conflict of interest between Deadlock and Gekko, where Deadlock's traumatic and hostile experience with the radivore bear in the UNMADE cinematic is in stark contrast with Gekko's friendly relationship with his 4 radivores.
